A Typographic Exploration
This project explores the emotional depth of artistic vulnerability through typography, drawing inspiration from the song Black Swan and Jerry Saltz’s article You Must Prize Vulnerability. The design reflects themes of inner fears, the “death” of an artist, and the expressive nature of dance.
Typography plays a key role in visual storytelling, with Adobe Garamond Pro and Didot LT Pro chosen to echo the elegance of French Baroque architecture depicted in the song. The secondary text integrates both Hangul and English lyrics, with the Hangul set in Gradiflora, a typeface that mirrors the organic, fluid movements of a swan. Through a carefully curated typographic composition, the book captures the interplay of identity, passion, and artistic struggle.
The final work communicates the message of the song’s lyrics by using the primary text to create images from type. The cover page presents the song’s title in a subtle and minimalist way, setting the tone for the book. The interior text integrates excerpts from the song, balancing and harmonizing with the primary text from the article. The book’s ultimate goal is to convey the elegance and grace of the music through its typographic design.
